With summers arriving in the city soon, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday said it will procure chemicals, biolarvicides and other material to prevent mosquito-breeding.
The Standing Committee of the MCD has approved four proposals for purchase of chemicals to prevent vector-breeding the civic body will purchase of 1,40,000 kg of Temephos granules worth Rs 50.08 lakh to prevent vector-breeding in stagnant water of coolers and uncovered overhead tanks,40 tonnes of Malathion worth Rs 57.64 lakh used for fogging to kill adult mosquitoes,5,400 litres of pyrethrum extract worth Rs 76.43 lakh for spraying, and 2,75,000 litres of biolarvicides worth Rs 27.22 lakh.
Earlier,a number of councillors, mostly from the ruling BJP in the civic agency, objected to the use of Hindustan Latex Ltd (a Government of India undertaking) as a consultant for the procurement and said the MCD should buy the items itself.
Summers are around and we need these chemicals as soon as possible,so we are currently going ahead with the purchase as suggested by HLL. Next time onwards,we have asked the Health department to procure the medicines themselves without involving a consulting agency, said Yogender Chandolia,Chairman of the Standing Committee.
According to the proposals,HLL will fix the rate of procurement and supplier agency in all cases for a year and get a consultancy charge of 2 per cent. Several councillors had opposed the move, saying the MCD is wasting finances by engaging a consultancy company.
Municipal Health Officer N K Yadav, however, defended the move, saying the consultancy charge was lowered from 3.5 per cent to 2 per cent after long negotiations. HLL is a reputed government undertaking and provides us technical support. There are technical aspects and the department needs a consultant to take the right decision, he said.
