In a move which could provide major relief to commuters travelling to Noida and East Delhi, the Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed to extend the Ashram flyover over the Maharani Bagh T-point till the point where the DND flyway meets the Ring Road.
The proposal was submitted by the consultant hired by the PWD for improving traffic movement on the Mathura Road, from Ashram Chowk to Hotel Rajdoot, and on the Ring Road, from Ashram flyover to DND flyover.
“The proposal will be sent to the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre’s working group for in principle approval sometime this week,” an official said. Once completed, it will ensure hassle-free traffic movement from Moolchand till DND flyway.
“If the Ashram flyover is extended, it will also help open up the turn towards C V Raman Marg, which is presently closed. Till now, those coming from the Ashram flyover side and wanting to go to C V Raman Marg have to move straight along the Ring Road, take a U-turn near Gurdwara Bala Sahib and get back on the Ring Road through a loop road to proceed towards C V Raman Marg,” an official said.
To improve traffic movement on the stretch from Ashram Chowk to Hotel Rajdoot, an underground road has also been proposed, which will provide direct access from Mathura Road to NH-2.
“Construction of the underpass will provide direct access to traffic from Bhogal and surrounding areas towards Faridabad. This road will have three levels: a surface level road, a railway overbridge and an underpass,” the official said. The Ashram Chowk intersection provides connectivity between Mathura Road, NH-2 and the Ring Road (connecting Lajpat Nagar-Sarai Kale Khan and DND flyover) and happens to be one of the busiest intersections in Delhi.
The flyover on the Ring Road at Ashram crossing gets choked during peak hours on all weekdays. While several plans have been proposed to decongest the crossing, none has been implemented.
Meanwhile, in order to ensure smooth traffic movement between Delhi and Faridabad, the PWD is reviving the Kalindi Kunj bypass project. The starting point of the bypass will be the Ring Road near DND flyover. It will terminate near the Badarpur border. Motorists taking the bypass near Kalindi Kunj will be able to travel beyond Palwal in Haryana. “Right now, basic alignment issues are being sorted out,” the official said.
