Three of a family killed in Karnal Rd hit-and-run

A night out for a wedding turned into tragedy when three persons of a family were killed and three children injured in a hit-and-run while returning home from the ceremony. Members of the family were riding two motorcycles, which were hit by an unidentified vehicle early Sunday morning on the GT Karnal Road.

Police said Desraj, 32, his wife Kavita, 27, and brother Yogesh, 30, were killed riding two separate bikes after being hit probably by a truck around 4 am. Desraj’s daughters Kiran and Sadhna and son Nitin — all aged between 2 and 5 — were injured. They are being treated in GTGB Hospital. Kiran is said to be critical. “The families had gone to Victoria Garden in the Alipur area to attend a wedding, which ran late into the night. After the function was over, Desraj decided to leave for his house in Swaroop Nagar’s Khadda Colony. He borrowed a relative’s bike and took his wife and a child as pillion riders,” Dinesh, the uncle of the brothers, said.

“Yogesh took his brother’s two other children on his bike. The accident occurred within 15 minutes of their having left the wedding venue,” he said.

A senior police officer said, “We have registered a case of rash and negligent driving, though we have not yet identified the vehicle or the driver. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for a post-mortem and reports are awaited.”

Desraj was a construction worker in Alipur. Yogesh worked as a gardener. Desraj and Kavita leave behind four children, including a baby daughter who was at home with relatives while the family was at the wedding.

Yogesh is survived by his wife Geeta and their three-month-old daughter.
