The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police on Monday arrested three persons who are reportedly involved with an international drug smuggling racket. Police have seized 11 kg of heroin from them.
Police said that two of the accused — Sajjat and Shafaat — are from Baramullah in J&K, while the third — Mohammad Abdullah — is from Tamil Nadu.
Police said they had received a tip-off on Saturday regarding men men who had smuggled drugs to the city from Kashmir.
A trap was laid and and police nabbed two persons — Sajjat (40) and Shafaat Hussain Shah (45) — who were were handing over a consignment to Mohammad Abdullah (23) near Tiz Hazari main gate.
During questioning, Sajjat told police that he had procured the contraband from Muzaffarabad in Pakistan. Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) R S Yadav said, “Our investigation has revealed that Sajjat got the contraband from one Mohammed Iqbal in Muzaffarabad. Iqbal has links with terror organisations. The contraband is sourced from Afghanistan. Sajjat got the drugs to Uri and brought it to Delhi. “
Yadav said the smuggled heroin, valued at several crores, was smuggled to Chennai after which it was sent to Sri Lanka.
“The module is being run by international drug traffickers and has a well-organised network in PoK, Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, South-East Asian countries, Kuwait and the Middle East. The final destination of the contraband is Europe,” Yadav said.
Police said in Chennai, a businessman identified as Nasir was running the operations for Saleem from Kuwait.
In December last year, a member of this same module, identified as Mohammed Dharik, had been arrested with of 10 kilogram of heroin in his possession.
Police said Sajjat first came in contact with Pakistan-based Iqbal about a year ago, after which he started smuggling drugs and received a cut for every consignment.
Shafaat had recently come in contact with Sajjat, who offered him a tip for helping him bring the heroin to Delhi from Kashmir. Police claim that Abdullah was directly in touch with Saleem on social networking sites.
