The Gurgaon police on Friday arrested three men for the acid attack on a 28-year-old woman and her nine-year-old daughter earlier this week. The incident was reported from Palam Vihar on Monday afternoon. The three arrested have been identified as Raja (20), Azad (26) and Arif (21). Police said main accused Raja (20), who hails from Muzzafarpur in Bihar, lives in Dharam Colony, Gurgaon. During questioning, he told police that he had asked Azad to throw acid on the woman, Suman Rawat, and promised to pay him Rs 30,000 for the job. “A sum of Rs 2,000 had been paid and the balance was to be paid after the attack,” Gurgaon Police Commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk said. Police said Arif, a resident of Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, introduced Azad to Raja. Arif and Azad, who belongs to Bijnore district, UP, lived close to Raja’s house in Dharam Colony. According to police, the accused knew the woman. “Raja ordered the attack because Rawat had refused his advances. When Rawat opened the door, the accused introduced himself as a plumber and said he was looking for Rampal. When she informed him that it was the wrong address, he threw acid on her and some splashed on her daughter,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Sangeeta Rani said. Rawat sustained 30 per cent burns on her body, while her daughter sustained five per cent burns on her head. Both are currently undergoing treatment at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi. Police said the cost of the treatment is being borne by the Department of Women and Child Development, Haryana, under the Relief and Rehabilitation of Acid Attack Victims (Women and Child) Scheme. After the incident, the district administration of Gurgaon had sanctioned Rs 50,000 each to the mother and the daughter, from the District Red Cross Society.
