Nearly a month after banned drugs were recovered from a Mahindra Thar SUV that mowed down two pedestrians in Lutyens’ Delhi’s Chanakyapuri, police have arrested a Nigerian national for allegedly supplying the contraband to the car driver.

A senior police officer said the accused, Ndubusi (40), was recently arrested from Southeast Delhi’s East of Kailash, adding that he is being questioned further to uncover the wider drug syndicate.

The incident took place on the morning of August 10, when the Thar allegedly mowed down two men sleeping on a pavement near Gyarah Murti in Chanakyapuri. The driver, Ashish Bachchas (26), was arrested on the spot and the vehicle seized.

During a forensic examination of the vehicle, police said they recovered contraband — 0.30 grams of cocaine, 2.6 grams of LSD, 23.47 grams of MD, 21.26 grams of ganja, and 15.49 grams of charas — hidden inside a bag tucked between the seats. They also found an empty liquor bottle, Rs 25,000 in cash, and a mobile phone.

The officer further said it is suspected that Ashish was supplying drugs after receiving consignments from Ndubusi, which he distributed at parties and to individuals.

Ashish, who was booked for causing death by negligent and rash driving, was later booked under sections 20, 21, 22, and 25 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at Chanakyapuri police station, the officer said.

During the course of the investigation, it was found that Ashish had rented the SUV to attend a party in Gurgaon. While returning to his home in East Delhi’s Shakarpur early Monday morning, he ran over the pedestrians.

According to the accused’s father, Ashish had left his job as a driver around six months ago and was considering registering as a Rapido driver.

Initially, Ashish told the police that he was unaware of the drugs found in the car. However, he later admitted that he had received them from a Nigerian national residing in Southeast Delhi. A team of officers from the police station was then constituted to search for the suspected Nigerian national, the officer said.

The team managed to nab Ndubusi from his residence, and he was subsequently questioned. “He had come to India in 2010 on a student visa. His visa expired in 2012, but he continued to stay in the country illegally. He also lived in Goa for a few years before returning to Delhi,” the officer added.

“Over two dozen people connected to both accused have been questioned. We believe more arrests will be made in the drug supply case in the coming days,” police said.
