Manoeuvring your way through this new restaurant is a task since Izakaya places its dining chairs a step above the other, however, figuring out their menu, mercifully,is easy. There’s a lot more Japanese on offer, beyond what most of us are familiar with, unpretentiously explained. Besides the regular sushi rolls, miso soup and tempura,Izakaya has an extensive main course menu on offer.

Once you are seated,it’s the chairs that catch your attention first. Curiously, the chairs have only a left arm rest but there is a zashiki room for traditional floor seating, perfect for those interested in a more authentic set-up.

We began a cold winter dinner with Chicken Soup (Rs 250),that has a strong flavour of seaweed. The clear vegetable broth (Rs 225) is nuanced, with a hint of jasmine in the vegetable stock. A bowl of Edamame (Rs 350) was a nice starter as well. The Charcoal grilled chicken leg (Rs 680) is ceremoniously served on a steel mat above a small table grill.

While the sushi platter offers luscious and generous portions of fish, the grilled black cod (Rs 625) needs some toning down; the flavour of radish was way too strong in the accompaniments.

There is plenty of sake and wines to choose from. In their list of Japanese style mocktails,Gari Sensation turned out to be a visual delight of sweet pickled ginger swimming in a pink coloured drink.
