Students launch project to address teen depression

The rising number of teen depression cases due to fierce competition and communication issues prompted six final year students of Bachelor of Mass Media.

The rising number of teen depression cases due to fierce competition and communication issues prompted six final year students of Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM),SIES College,Sion,to launch a project to address the issue. Called ‘Now – Rise in Action’,the project aims at creating awareness among fellow students and their parents.

The initiative was started by six BMM (Advertising) students of SIES College in association with Disha Psychiatric clinic. These students also started a page on a social networking site to promote the cause. “We started the campaign as our project for 100 marks, but then we decided to create awareness on the issue among students and parents. We managed to convince some students in our college to visit the counsellors and discuss their problems,” said Prateek Pandey, one of the six students.

According to the students, teen depression is not a sign of weakness,it’s a medical illness. In their project, they have also emphasised that mostly it’s the generation conflict and communication gap that leads to depression among teens and college students.

Prateek added,“It’s high time we realise that the generational conflict leads to lack of communication between teenagers and their parents. This leads to acute depression. We started this initiative to help our friends and fellow students who are battling depression.”

Another student,Vinika Gala, said,“Before starting this campaign,we discussed the matter in detail with the counsellor in our college. She is associated with Disha Psychiatric clinic. While talking to the students,we realised that many were not even aware of the counsellor in our college.”

These students are now working on extending their campaign to other colleges in the city. “Our efforts paid off when we saw students on campus taking our campaign seriously. It began as part of our project work, but has now become our social responsibility and we have decided to extend it to other colleges,” said Vinika.
