Students, instructors see red over DU admission criteria

It pays to be a zonal-level sportsperson rather than a national level one when it comes to applying for admission to colleges attached to the Delhi University.

It pays to be a zonal-level sportsperson rather than a national level one when it comes to applying for admission to colleges attached to the Delhi University. A participation certificate at the zonals will give a candidate 15 marks, while a similar certificate at the national level earns just 12.

Revised criteria also gives more weightage to certificates over performance during trials. Earlier,up to 50 marks could be earned through certificates while the other 50 could be garnered during selection trials. However, now up to 75 marks are being allotted for certificates, while only 25 are given for trials.

These new guidelines come into being from June 22 but college authorities are unhappy with the greater weightage given to zonal level meets and also less importance attached to selection trials.

SK Chakravarty, the director of physical education,St Stephen’s College livid. “I am shocked to know that a zonal-level player will be considered better than one who has made a mark at the national level,” Chakravarty said.

Others point to the fact that colleges weren’t consulted when these revised criteria were being formulated by the university. Physical education staff, enraged by the new guidelines, aren’t going to be at the centralised selection trials.

Kirori Mal College’s director of physical education Pramod Sharma is sure that the trials will be biased or flawed as most of his tribe are disassociating themselves from this selection procedure. “The earlier system ensured that only talented sportspersons made the cut. I don’t know what will happen this time.” There is no foolproof method to check the authenticity of certificates and that only heightens the concerns of students and physical education instructors.

Delhi University’s director of sports Dr Sudarshan Pathak sprung to the defence of the revised criteria.

“We wanted this centralised system as this would allow students to appear in trials of various colleges,” Pathak said.

Colleges,up in arms against the new guidelines, haven’t forwarded the final assessment (marks given for certificates) of students to the Delhi University. The deadline for doing so was June 11.

MP Sharma,Director Physical Education,Hansraj College believes that students will be the biggest losers at the end of it all.

Students voice similar concerns. “I am a national level player but I know that someone who isn’t as good as me will go ahead, thanks to more weightage being given to zonal players.”
