Two people meet, fight and fall in love what could be the premise of a Bollywood musical becomes an intimate portrayal of homosexual romance in the hands of National Award-winning director Rituparno Ghosh. Ghoshs film,Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish,in Bengali and English, wraps the story of two men in love in layers of mythology from the Mahabharata and Rabindranath Tagores classics. As Ghosh gets ready to release the film in West Bengal on August 31,one suspects that this film is closer to his heart than his previous works such as Raincoat and Chokher Bali.
This film is not only about a same-sex relationship. In the Mahabharata, there was a reproductive purpose for Arjun and Chitrangada. When Tagore told this tale in a dance drama, this reproductive purpose was gone. It was more a fight for identity; Tagore had created an openly queer text, says Ghosh.
There is a constant fluidity in the subject of the film where self-conflictory ideas clash to take the story to the next level. There was no linear movement in the acting pattern of the cast. The actors have grown into their respective characters, says Ghosh. Apart from Sengupta and Ghosh, the film boasts a star cast of Anjan Datta and Raima Sen.
Ghosh has acted in films before, but Chitrangada,he insists,is different. This is the first time that Im acting in my own film. So it was challenging for me to be the director as well as the central character. During the pre-production stage,I had to make sure that when I was in front of the camera,my ideas and visions as a director were implemented by those behind it, he says.
Ghosh plans a nationwide release of the film soon.
