The Government Senior Secondary School (GSS) in Khajuri Khas,Northeast Delhi, where five girls lost their lives and more than 30 were injured after a stampede, remained closed on Tuesday after parents of the victims threatened that “they won’t let the school function again till the culprits are brought to book.”

Faheem-ud-din,father of Ayesha Khatoon, one of the five deceased students, said,“We won’t let the school reopen until arrests are made and action taken.”

An Education department official, who did not wish to be named, said: “The situation is tense as the parents are angry with the school authorities. It is still fresh in their minds. We are monitoring the situation on a day-to-day basis.”

“We will have to take the opinion of the police before we decide to reopen the school. The situation is tense,” the official added.

Exams have been rescheduled for “psychological relief” to injured students who are still recuperating.

Another government school,Sarvodaya Vidyalaya — located across the one where the incident happened — reopened for classes, but attendance was low. “I went to school but most of my friends did not attend,” Pooja,a Class VIII student, said.

Students of GSS School are worried. “My parents are even thinking of taking me off from the school rolls. Who will guarantee that such an incident would not happen again?” asked Shama Parveen,a Class XII student.
