A 25-year-old man slit his wrists at Arvind Kejriwal’s Janta Darbar in Kaushambi on Friday morning, reportedly to express his support for the Aam Aadmi Party.

Kejriwal, who was standing right next to the man,Zamil Ahmad, asked volunteers to rush him to the nearest hospital. Officials said Ahmad was taken to Meenakshi Hospital, where his wrist was bandaged. He was discharged later.

At a little past 9 am,when Kejriwal arrived at the Kaushambi office, where he has held a janta darbar for the past 3 days,Ahmad stepped in front of Kejriwal and slit his wrists. While in the act,he said to Kejriwal,“Subhash Chandra Bose had said ‘tum mujhe khoon do,main tumhein azadi dunga’. I am with you and would do anything for you.”

Kejriwal, however, was visibly disturbed and said,“There are other ways of showing your support. This is not right.”

Ahmad said he was a resident of Deoli and had come to the Janta Darbar to draw attention to the “jhuggi system”.

“There is lots of corruption in the jhuggi system. We have no basic amenities… The authorities take money from us,threatening to demolish the jhuggis if we do not pay,” Ahmad alleged.
