Following the arrest of a neurosurgeon in a ‘cash-for-treatment’ case by the CBI, Safdarjung Hospital has formed a three-member committee to look into implants being brought from outside for surgeries – if they are not available in the hospital – and help patients procure these at a reasonable price.
The neurosurgeon Dr Manish Rawat and four of his accomplices; Deepak Khattar, the proprietor of Kanishka Surgical, and middlemen Avnesh Patel, Manish Sharma and Kuldeep Kumar are accused of allegedly forcing patients to buy surgical equipment from a particular establishment at exorbitant prices.
According to Dr BL Sherwal, Medical Superintendent at Safdarjung Hospital, for now, planned surgeries have been halted and a prior list of implants and equipment required will be prepared for surgeries, which are set to be done in the next six months.
“The committee has asked all the departments to give their request of implants for the surgeries lined up for the next six months. The decision has been taken to ensure that the patients do not suffer and end up buying equipment through middlemen,” he added. He said the committee will work on the modalities and prepare the list of implants required.
Medical implants are devices or tissues that are placed inside or on the surface of the body. Many implants are prosthetics, intended to replace missing body parts. Other implants deliver medication, monitor body functions, or provide support to organs and tissues. The committee will also conduct regular inspections in operation theatres and ICUs.
According to CBI officials, the charges levelled against the accused pertained to bribery and corruption.
“It was alleged that Rawat, in conspiracy with the other accused, was indulging in illegal activities. He was taking money for giving medical advice, conducting surgery on patients and bypassing laid down rules regarding treatment in Safdarjung Hospital. He was also allegedly directing patients through these middlemen to purchase instruments required for surgery from Khattar’s surgical shop. It was also alleged that the accused compelled patients to pay a higher amount for those instruments than the actual price and got a share,” the CBI official said.
