A scuffle broke out Tuesday night at Jamia Millia Islamia when a group of students were holding Diwali celebrations on the campus.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Ravi Kumar Singh, DCP Southeast, said, “The incident occurred around 7:30-8 pm near gate 7. A group of students affiliated with the ABVP were putting up diyas and making rangolis for Diwali, which displeased another group of students. The other group wrecked the decorations, which led to a scuffle. Both sides engaged in sloganeering. Police were deployed to maintain the peace; they are stationed there for the night as a precautionary measure. Students were ordered to disperse and the crowd left by 9 pm.”

Different student groups had different versions of what allegedly transpired.

“The event was held by a student group called Yuva, which organised a rangoli competition. The permission to hold it inside the campus was till 6 pm, but the event went on until post 7 pm, and I could see 8-10 outsiders, including from the ABVP, enter the campus and chant slogans. They instigated students of Jamia, calling them ‘outsiders’, which is when the scuffle broke out,” claimed Mohammad Alfouz, the national secretary of a student outfit called Fraternity Movement.

In a statement Tuesday, the JMI unit of the Student Federation of India claimed that “ABVP, under the guise of Diwali celebrations, unleashed an attack on students”. The JMI unit of the Congress-backed NSUI also blamed the “shameful act of violence by ABVP goons on our campus”.

Responding to the allegations, ABVP’s national media convenor Ashutosh Singh said, “ABVP was not responsible for any ruckus on Jamia’s campus. There were some outsiders who entered the campus and started chatting slogans related to Palestine, which instigated the ruckus.”
