Road cracks open in Gurgaon

Two persons had a narrow escape on Friday morning when the main road between Crown Plaza and Signature Tower caved in. Ashutosh Chaturvedi (26),a resident of Surya Vihar in Dundahera,was on his way to work around 11 am. Eyewitness said the Hyundai i10 that Chaturvedi was driving took a turn towards South City I when the mishap took place.

The road suddenly caved in on both sides of a road divider. A car crashed into the pit. On the other side of the road,the rear wheels of a truck also got stuck in the gap, said Surender,a kiosk owner,on the road outside Signature Tower.

The truck owner was discharged after first aid while Chaturvedi is still admitted in Paras Hospital with injuries. Police said that he is out of danger. Chaturvedi works at Karvy Stock Exchange Brokering Ltd in Sector 14.

The approach road built by HUDA was in the news when the administration was laying a sewerage line earlier this year.

At the accident spot,cracks on the surface only prove the road is structurally weak. It is surprising that the road sustained heavy traffic load for all these months. HUDA should have made proper arrangements to secure the top layer, said a police officer at the spot.

Jagdish Prasad,investigating officer at the Sector-29 police station,said: The road could have caved in either because it was weak in structure or because of a faulty sewage line. Seepage from the underground drain or rainwater accumulated below the surface could have loosened the soil.

Gurgaon Police are questioning the HUDA junior engineer to find out the exact cause. A case has been registered under Sections 336 and 337 of the IPC on charges of corruption and negligence at the Sector 29 police station.
