Rich haul of cash,liquor,weapons seized in final poll run-up

Besides the cash,police have also recovered around 1,643 litre of country liquor and 760 litre of Indian Made Foreign liquor. Apart from these,4,895 bottles of country made liquor have been seized,while the corresponding figure for IMFL is 2,525.

Also seized were 1,233 half bottles of country liquor. The figure for IMFL is 603.

An additional 537 bottles of beer have also been seized.

According to sources in the Election Commission of India,the Delhi Police had been ordered to conduct a strict check on the supply of liquor,especially in the slums.

The vigil was tighter on Monday,December 2,beginning which liquor will be banned till the date of polling.

The circular issued by Delhi Police chief B S Bassi too had directed personnel to conduct special patrolling in JJ clusters and “sensitive areas” to ensure that “liquor is not distributed and then misused on the day of polling”.

In other preventive measures taken by police,2,703 persons have been detained as preventive arrest under 107 of the CrPC. The moves comes after Bassi’s guideline to his force to “properly monitor” the activities of all such persons,who are known to commit election-related offences.

Sources in the EC said the Crime Branch had also been asked to monitor the movement of “active criminals” from other states who could create trouble during the elections.

Meanwhile,a total of 1,614 licensed arms have been deposited with police till November 30. Police sources said while most were asked to surrender their arms till the end of elections,several turned up on their own to deposit their arms.

“The arms will be returned to their owners after the elections. There have been several instances of people misusing their arms and indulging in violence. Now,that the licensed holders have deposited their arms,police will only have to worry about those with illegal weapons,” a senior official of the Election Commission said.

So far,police have recovered 71 weapons and 85 cartridges held illegally. They have also identified hyper sensitive booths,where several VIPs will be casting their votes on December 4.

Sources said the Special Cell has been directed to monitor the movements around those hypersensitive booths to ensure that no person with a threat to their life is attacked on the day of voting.
