Workers repair a poster damaged during last
night’s rain. Express A fountain not working, hoardings damaged, non-functional light poles: The New Delhi Municipal Council’s G20 Control Room had its hands full addressing 20 complaints since Friday and ensuring all was in working order during the Summit.
Said NDMC vice-chairperson Satish Upadhyay, “After the rain yesterday, 7-8 welcome hoardings in the area were damaged… the control room assessed the damage and replaced the hoardings immediately. We had also received some complaints that were outside the NDMC’s jurisdiction; the control room forwarded these to the relevant authorities for resolution, and this helped to ensure swift action.”
Further, the control room is using real-time information to respond proactively to events. For instance, after a rainfall alert received was at 5.35 am, all divisions and sub-divisions were put on alert as the NDMC braced for potential waterlogging.
“Pump operations are being readied and we have put our mechanics on standby,” Upadhyay said after he received the rain alert. The NDMC has readied 60 pumps in case of heavy rain.
“What helps the council with its real-time abilities is the smooth execution (of work) by sanitation staff… The level of cooperation and synergy exhibited across all departments and agencies is praiseworthy,” Upadhyay stated.
Currently, the council has aligned departmental activities with the schedules of dignitaries. “Work is being done on assigned time slots… We are scheduled to function according to their (delegate) movement to ensure that essential tasks, such as garbage collection, sanitation work, vehicle movement and repairs, are not being performed when delegates are passing by,” Upadhyay said.
