Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said she wants development for Delhi instead of statehood and added people in her government will not be able to sleep till water reaches every house in the Capital. Taking a dig at the AAP, she said they were protesting while being in power and are doing the same being the Opposition. A while ago, Gupta commented on BJP’s historic win in the Assembly polls and said the residents realised the Capital needed a double-engine government. Gupta was the guest at Express Adda today and was in conversation with Vandita Mishra, National Opinion Editor, The Indian Express.
When asked about the demolition of slums in Delhi, Gupta said, “If people are not willing to leave slums after being given a Rs 35 lakh flat in a good area, then it’s wrong. Delhi has 675 slum clusters. The previous governments, neither the Congress nor the AAP, provided houses to the slum dwellers. The court has ordered people not to live on railway lines or near drains, which may lead to flooding. Furthermore, she said that if the BJP government is demolishing slums, it is also providing new houses to people. “This is something that previous governments did not do,” she said.
Four months ago, the BJP returned to power in Delhi after 27 years and CM Gupta has been spearheading the government since. Gupta has made several big-ticket announcements from a clean Yamuna to pothole-free roads and regulation on private school fees. Leading the government with 48 MLAs from her party, Gupta’s tenure has seen increased coordination between the Centre, the Union Territory, and both municipal corporations. She faces challenges in balancing people’s expectations and her government’s development mantra, and delivering on promises such as Rs 2,500 aid for women.

Our aim is to implement every scheme swiftly, ensuring that people can benefit from initiatives like the one providing Rs 2,500 every month to eligible women. We are working diligently to ensure all eligible beneficiaries in the city receive the benefits of this scheme, and it will be implemented soon," Gupta says.

Rekha Gupta says: There are both pros and cons for full statehood. But Delhi is the national capital of India. I want development for Delhi instead of full statehood.
Rekha Gupta says: The previous AAP government and the party divided Delhi vertically into two parts - tax payers and traders, who have been facing unemployment. Traders who pay taxes today find it difficult to survive in Delhi, and they are moving out of the city. Another category is the one who was given 200 units of electricity for free to get votes. However, people gradually understood free electricity will not yield in growth. Basic amenities like health, water and road infrastructure are also important.
Speaking about her political journey, CM Gupta says, I don't come from a political party. I was the first girl from the Aggarwal community to contest a university election. I am happy that there is a party that gives an opportunity to people who come from a non-political background."

On being asked about her role in the India Against Corruption movement, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta says, Ït was a movement where people of Delhi thought a change is going to come. All of them wanted a corruption-free government. With that hope, hundreds of people joined, and I also joined them with the hope that an honest government will come up. However, people will not forget the party for what they did in the last ten years.
