Rains lash parts of Delhi-NCR

It has also forecasted duststorms in Delhi on June 5 and 6.

Amidst an ongoing heatwave, light rains lashed parts of Delhi and NCR on Wednesday evening as Western Disturbance hit Northwest India.

On June 5, the Indian Meteorological Department took note of a Western Disturbance which was seen as a cyclonic circulation over Afghanistan; the Southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea over the Northwest India plains will continue for the next 3 days.

Under such circumstances, the IMD has predicted isolated very light to light rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning & gusty winds (30-50 kmph) to be very likely over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi between June 5 to 7. It has also forecasted duststorms in Delhi on June 5 and 6.

The RWFC Delhi, in its X (former Twitter), handle with timestamp 05/06/2024: 22:50 IST said a “dust storm/Thunderstorm with rain (followed by rain) and gusty winds with a speed of 50-80 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and NCR, Hindon AF Station, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, Greater Noida.”

The IMD issued the future impact and here is its assessment:

The strong wind or hail may be damaging to the plantation, horticulture and standing crops.  There may be instances of loose objects to fly. It also said, there could be minor damage to kutcha houses and partial damage to vulnerable structures given the strong winds. It has advised people to stay indoors, close windows, and doors and avoid travel if possible.

Some additional instructions include:

Take safe shelters, do not take shelter under trees.

Do not lie on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls

Unplug electrical/electronic appliances

If in water bodies, immediately get out of it

Stay away from all electrical conducting objects

The Indian Meteorological Department forecasted heatwave conditions to likely continue in isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh and over parts of East India for the next five days.

As per the RMC, New Delhi will witness a maximum temperature of 42°C and a minimum of 30°C on June 6 and June 7, the maximum temperature is expected to be 43°C and the minimum 30°C.
