Rain brings relief from humid weather but waterlogging and snarls choke city

Monsoon: 8.1 mm rainfall recorded in the capital on Monday,Met department says showers likely today

Rainfall and overcast conditions on Monday brought respite from sultry weather in the national capital, but the wet spell did not lead to any drastic drop in the mercury. Although the city woke up to a warm and muggy morning, rain hit several parts of the city as the day progressed, leading to snarls.

According to the MeT department, there was no rainfall till 8.30 am. “(But) between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm,a total of 8.1 mm rainfall was measured in the city,” a Met department official said.

Though the showers brought relief, maximum and minimum temperatures remained a degree above normal in the city while the humidity level oscillated between 67 and 91 per cent. The maximum was recorded at 34.3 degrees Celsius while the minimum settled at 27.7 degrees, both a degree above normal for this time of the year.

According to the weather office, rainfall was recorded mostly in South,East and West Delhi, with Palam receiving just 0.7 mm rain. Places that witnessed heavy showers were Ayanagar (20.9mm),Lodhi Road (6.2mm),Najafgarh (9mm) and Akshardham (15mm). North Delhi received relatively low rainfall.

Medium to heavy downpour drenched several parts of the city, leading to traffic snarls in several areas. The forecast is for generally cloudy skies tomorrow, with the possibility of rainfall and thundershowers. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be at 32 and 27 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Light to moderate showers also occurred at a few places in Punjab and Haryana although, like Delhi, the two states did not see any major change in temperatures.

But Uttar Pradesh was still grappling with the heavy monsoon which has ensured that the major rivers in the state continued to remain in spate. Heavy rainfall and thundershowers were reported in the eastern districts of UP,and major rivers continued to flow above the danger level at many places.
