A day before B R Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary, a Left organisation held demonstrations at the Delhi University (DU) and burnt copies of the Manusmriti. The North campus Wednesday witnessed two protest marches — one by the Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) and the other by the All India Students Association (AISA) — which were attended by students from DU, JNU and, Jamia Millia Islamia.
The KYS march was organised to protest the alleged assault of a Dalit student and Sanghathan member in Hansraj College. The protest started with slogans against college authorities. “The society doesn’t need casteism, feudalism or discrimination. Today, the society needs jobs, education and development,” said Harish Gautam, convener of KYS’s anti-caste cell.
The protesters had planned to burn pages of the Manusmriti but they were not allowed to do so. Gautam and some other KYS members were detained by police. The students had been granted permission for the protest but they were detained “to maintain law and order”, said police. They were released later.

Ambedkar wanted India to be Hindu Rashtra: ABVP
The ABVP’s JNU unit Wednesday said Ambedkar “wanted India to be a Hindu Rashtra” and he was in favour of Sanskrit being named the national language.
“Bhim Rao Ambedkar wanted India to be a Hindu Rashtra and he also wanted Sanskrit as a national language (sic)” read a statement on the Facebook page of the unit. Rohit Kumar, vice-president of the ABVP’s JNU unit, said, “Ambedkar did criticise some aspects of the Hindu religion but he had told Hindutvavaadi organisations in his day, ‘aap bhagwa jhande ka prastav rakho, hum aapke saath hain (you propose a nation under the saffron flag, I am with you).”
