Do you think the city needs more stringent laws to deal with drink driving?

Yes, Delhi needs more stringent laws for drink driving. Apart from making stringent laws, we want quick implementation. Enforcement is what can bring a change in the existing scenario. We need to create a deterrent among motorists and set a standard of zero tolerance.

Are you planning new measures/drives to educate motorists and curb the menace?

We are also conducting awareness programmes and spreading awareness through advertisements. However, we will see enforcement is 100 per cent. We give errant drivers 20-minute counselling classes before giving back their licence.

In developed countries, nightlife is more vibrant, but people are not allowed to drink and drive. The police there have tie-ups with clubs/bar owners to provide cabs to people on the spot to take them home. Do you think such a system could work here and should the government and police think of unconventional ways to deal with the situation?

Yes, there is a strong possibility that this policy will work in Delhi. On several occasions, it has happened too.

On big events such as New Years etc, we ask all the club/hotel owners to provide transport facility to guests and not allow people to drive in a drunken state.

Why are only a few people sent to jail for such offences, even in the case of repeat offenders?

It’s a sub judice matter and we cannot comment on this as we can only apprehend the offenders. But we will also request the judiciary to take action in a limited time period so that there is no laxity given to offenders.
