After the Additional Solicitor-General of India favoured making pollution control certificate mandatory for motorists at petrol pumps, the Environment department of the Delhi government has sent the file to Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung for perusal.
According to officials, the file is in process and a notification on it will be made only after the L-G gives his decision. The officials said the problem of air pollution has become acute despite efforts by the department. “L-G has sought ASG’s views on the issue pertaining to the legality of it. Now, that he has sent his views, it will be forwarded to the L-G. After the L-G approves it, the government will issue a notification,” a senior official said.
The proposal that was sent for approval demands that motorists should be denied petrol at pumps if they do not have the Pollution Under Control certificate.
The official made a point that facilities are available at various petrol pumps for checking of vehicles’ pollution level and government is committed to make further arrangements in this regard.
A high powered committee tabled the proposal after WHO declared Delhi has the worst air quality compared to many cities in the world. The Delhi government has also decided to regulate the entry of non-destined vehicles in the city.
In order to make the process easier for motorists, the government is planning to give PUC stickers so that they need not to produce the certificate every time they go to purchase fuel.
