Unidentified assailants robbed a temple in East Delhi and beat up its priest in the early hours of Sunday,the police said.

According to the police,the incident was reported between 2 and 3 am on Sunday from Surajmal Vihar in Anand Vihar.

The police officers said the priest of the Sanathan Dharm Temple,identified as Bharat Sharma,was sleeping in his quarters when 3 to 4 assailants broke in,tied him up with a blanket and beat him up.

The cashier of the temple R C Gupta said the priest’s hand was fractured in the incident.

The assailants then allegedly robbed Rs 70,000 of the charity money,15 gold crowns and 12 silver holy umbrellas (chatra),the police said.

The police said after the assailants left,the priest raised an alarm and a PCR call was made.

“We have registered a case at the Anand Vihar police station and further investigations into the case are on,” a senior police officer said.
