The arrested accused were identified as Harish Chandra, 56, and Satyendra Chaudhary, 39, residents of Kirti Nagar.Days after the body of a 32-year-old man was found near the railway tracks in West Delhi’s Kirti Nagar on Monday, the police arrested his former girlfriend’s father and cousin in connection with the murder. The girl’s brother is on the run.
Officers identified the deceased as Angad, a resident of Basai Darapur in Moti Nagar. He was found lying in the bushes with a deep cut on his neck. The arrested accused were identified as Harish Chandra, 56, and Satyendra Chaudhary, 39, residents of Kirti Nagar.
According to Kirti Nagar police, which registered a murder case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Amar and his family were convinced that the police could not rein in Angad, who had been harassing his sister and threatening the family. The family was also worried that Angad’s two-year relationship with the woman, which they had kept a secret till recently, would become public. Fearing that this would tarnish the family’s honour, Amar, his father Harish Chandra, and cousin Satyendra, allegedly decided to act themselves.
Officers said CCTV footage from near the victim’s residence indicated that he was last seen with Amar and his cousin Satyendra. Using technical analysis and local intelligence inputs, the police traced Satyendra to his residence and arrested him. “On being questioned, he disclosed that Amar’s father Harish Chandra was also involved in the murder plot. Harish was subsequently arrested,” said Darade Sharad Bhaskar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West.
According to the police, Angad had begun harassing Amar’s sister after the couple had separated following a two-year relationship. Angad’s relatives lived close to the girl’s house, and the two would inconspicuously meet when Angad would pretend to visit his relative’s house.
“The girl’s family discovered their relationship sometime around Chhath. Angad and Amar’s family had a discussion about the relationship and decided that the two must part ways. The girl was subsequently sent to her native village in UP’s Basti after Chhath,” said an officer.
Incensed at the forced separation, Angad began calling the girl and her family often to abuse them, the police said. Things escalated when Angad threatened to publish the couple’s intimate videos online. Despite several warnings from the girl’s family, Angad’s threats did not abate. The police said Amar travelled from Bengaluru to Delhi on November 14 and stayed with Satyendra as they planned the assault.
“On the evening of November 16, Amar and Satyendra went to the victim’s room but avoided killing him there due to the presence of CCTV cameras. They lured him to Kirti Nagar railway lines under the pretext of consuming liquor and resolving the issue. After drinking, the two overpowered Angad and slit his neck with a paper cutter… Harish Chandra remained in constant touch with them throughout the act,” said DCP Bhaskar.
The police have recovered the blood-stained paper cutter, the victim’s phone, and Satyendra’s blood-stained clothes. A search is on to locate Amar.
