It was a day of draws in the senior Nehru hockey tournament on Monday, the last day of the league stage. While Army XI and Punjab National Bank (PNB) played out a 1-1 draw in the first match of the day,Air India and ONGC split points in the other match.
The match between PNB and Army XI was not of much significance, given that both teams had already qualified from Pool B for the semi-finals. However,PNB topped the pool by winning a tie-breaker,after both teams were tied at five points after the league stage and finishing with the same goal difference and goals scored.
With the pressure of qualifying for the last four absent, both teams preferred to play a wait-and-watch game and were content in keeping the ball in midfield. There were few attempts at either goal and after a barren first half,PNB finally took lead through a penalty corner by Jalwinder Singh in the 39th minute, and immediately fell back into defensive play.
Army XI earned two PCs but were unable to convert either. The rest of the game was a drab affair with the Armymen levelling in the 42nd minute through Eliazer Ekka.
In the other match,ONGC drew star-studded Air India 2-2 after leading 2-1 at half time. ONGC went ahead twice, first through a penalty stroke by captain Harpal Singh and then Bikash Toppo, but Air India fought back both times to level scores. Dhanraj Pillay converted a PC and VS Vinaya scored once.
Semi-finals: (live on DD National): 12 pm: IOCvs Army XI
