The Union Urban Development Ministry has proposed a special mechanism to redevelop old CPWD housing complexes such as the ones in Sarojini Nagar,Sriniwaspuri and Mohammadpur in South Delhi.

“Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath has approved the plan. We are now working out the finer details. The special mechanism has been planned to ensure efficient management of the project,” Urban Development Secretary Sudhir Krishna said.

“The plan includes reconstruction and renovation of old and ramshackled government flats of bureaucrats. Since the project will be entirely funded by the CPWD,without any financial assistance from the government,we will try to generate revenue by making space for commercial activities,” a CPWD official said.

If the project succeeds, housing complexes in Lodhi Road could be taken up,the official said. “In accordance with the new building bylaws,we can use the increased floor area ratio to our advantage and build multi-storey buildings. We will be able to construct more flats and around 20 per cent space can be used for commercial and social activities,” Special DG of CPWD Rakesh Mishra said.

Moreover, the extra flats could be either sold or leased out to public sector undertakings, the official said.

The Urban Development Ministry has close to 64,208 government flats in Delhi under its jurisdiction.

It has entrusted the National Buildings Construction Corporation to replace the dilapidated flats at two complexes in New Moti Bagh (992 houses) and East Kidwai Nagar (6,107) with modern apartments.
