Two men, a painter and a peanut vendor, who were critically injured in a road accident near West Delhi’s Zakhira Gol Chakkar on Wednesday evening, died during treatment on Thursday, the police said.

The accident took place around 6.10 pm when one of the victims, identified as Mani Raj, 48, was on his way home after work, while the other victim, Surajpal, 74, was selling peanuts at his cart, the police said.

According to the Moti Nagar police, the injured pedestrians had already been shifted to Acharya Shree Bhikshu Government Hospital by the time they reached.

The police said that a speeding car hit Mani Raj, while he was crossing the road at Zakhira Gol Chakkar along with his friend, Jagdish.

“The car then crashed into the Gol Chakkar. The driver attempted to drive away by turning left but the car instead hit Surajpal who was selling peanuts from his cart,” said a senior police officer.

The car was found abandoned at the site of the collision, with the driver missing. Investigators said the vehicle was seized and the medico-legal reports collected.

The doctors later referred the accident victims to a higher centre, following which their families moved them to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, the police said.

“Attempts were made to record the victims’ statements, but both were declared unfit for questioning. However, the police took the statement of Jagdish, who had witnessed the entire accident,” said an officer.

According to police sources, the absence of CCTV cameras has made it difficult to follow the accused’s escape route. However, the police said they have traced the vehicle owner through the car’s registration details and have notified them to provide a statement.

Based on preliminary information, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 281 (rash or negligent driving) and 125(a) (act endangering life and personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Following the deaths of the two victims, the police added Section 106 (causing death by negligence) to the FIR.
