Worried over the possible withdrawal of recognition by the National Medical Commission (NMC), parents of students enrolled at Faridabad’s Al Falah University met senior faculty members on Saturday. They also submitted a representation to the Vice-Chancellor, expressing concern over the institution’s future.

The university has come under the scanner after three doctors working there were identified as suspects in the November 10 Delhi blast. The NAAC had issued a show cause notice to the university stating that its accreditation has expired and also sought to know why it should not recommend to the NMC that the institution’s recognition to offer programmes be withdrawn. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU), meanwhile, has suspended its membership over concerns about its “good standing”.

The developments have prompted anxiety among students and their families about continuation of studies, career prospects and validity of degrees.

In the letter to the V-C, the parents said the college is facing “serious regulatory and security issues” and ongoing investigations have put its operational viability in jeopardy.

Describing the situation as “unprecedented and disruptive”, they said the academic and professional future of hundreds of enrolled students now stands at “grave risk”. The parents sought immediate intervention and clear information regarding the current status of their children’s education and the steps being taken to resolve the crisis.

After meeting parents, a professor told media persons outside the university gates that Al Falah “will not shut down”.

Sanjeev Kumar, the father of a third-year MBBS student, said that among the doctors they met at campus was Dr Tabassum Bano, an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

“During the admission process, we were impressed with the facilities available at the university and the faculty… A couple of our relatives and acquaintances had recommended Al Falah. It was convenient for us, too, as we stayed in Delhi.”

“They told us today that the university is fully cooperating with the probe agencies and that there is no question of it shutting down. We (15-20 parents) just wanted to know that the future of our children is secure,” Kumar said.

“The faculty members claimed that the university’s human resources personnel have also been questioned but they have come out clean,” he added.

The parent of another student said, “We had some doubts regarding the future of our children. We have given representation to the management, which they have received and assured us verbally that the future of the children is safe and that the college will not be shut down.”
