A Jamia Nagar-based businessman was injured when an anonymous parcel delivered at his residence exploded after he opened it on Monday.
The victim,Mohammad Uzair,40,lives in Shaheen Bagh,Jamia Nagar. A part-time property dealer,Uzair supplied manpower to companies based in the Gulf.
The police said Uzair suffered burn injuries on his face,chest,abdomen and palms,besides injuries caused by shrapnel and glass pieces.
The police have ruled out a terror angle. An officer said it was a crude,low-intensity bomb meant to hurt only the person it was intended for they suspect it was sent to settle a business or personal spat.
The incident was reported at 3.40 pm.
According to the officer,Uzair was overseeing construction of his building in front of his residence when a man arrived on a motorcycle and delivered a parcel to Uzairs accountant Ijaz. The man,in his early thirties,reportedly told Ijaz that he had come from Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi.
He left immediately after delivering it,the officer said.
The parcel resembled a box of sweets and had Uzairs name and address typed on a label, the officer said. Ijaz gave it to Uzair,and soon as he opened it,the parcel exploded.
The impact was such that the front windowpanes of his house also cracked.
A labourer,one Qayasuddin,who was near the spot,said he called the Police Control Room and took Uzair to nearby Holy Family Hospital in a neighbours car. Uzair was referred to AIIMS Trauma Centre,where his condition is stated to be stable.
The victim has suffered some burn injuries and injuries to his eyes, AIIMS Trauma Centre chief Dr M C Misra told Newsline. His breathing is normal he is recuperating and is stable.
Uzair lives at F-138/1,Shaheen Bagh with wife and five children. Originally from Darbanga,Bihar,he settled in Jamia Nagar about 20 years ago. His son Shamsul said,He runs a construction business and looks at property dealing as well. He also supplies manpower to companies in the Gulf.
Additional DCP (Southeast) Sanjay Jain said,This was not meant to be a terror attack. It was a low-intensity,crude bomb. We have registered a case under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) and Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosive Substance Act (causing explosion and making or keeping explosive).
The Bomb Disposal Squad and a forensics team visited the spot to collect evidence.
Prima facie,it seems nails and glass pieces were assembled with an explosive material,an officer said. No timer was recovered.
