The torrential rain might have prevented some from travelling to Gallery Espace on Friday for the opening of the exhibition “Gender-Genesis-Genetics” but gallerist and curator Renu Modi was present to welcome those who braved overflowing roads and traffic snarls. “It is a varied but a very together show. We have got a great response,” smiled Modi. On display was artwork by seven contemporary women artists. The theme of gender and its relationship with power might be oft repeated but making this show unique are the references, where artists have taken inspiration from their surroundings. “Every artist responds to gender in a different way,” noted Modi,as she pointed out the artists who come from across the world — from Mumbai-based Tejal Shah to Mona Kamal in New York,Gayatri Gomuz in Thiruvannamalai and Parvathi Nayar who shuttles between Chennai and Singapore. “Their language is different from each other,” added Modi.

So in her photographs Tejal Shah recalls her encounters in a mental asylum in Paris. She enacts the roles of mentally-challenged patients who are often used for experiments in asylums, drawing attention to their plight. Bangalore-based Surekha,on the other hand, records a group of women who hand stitch quilts. In her video ‘Threading the Thread’,she captures the autobiographical renditions of these women and in another installation she uses their tools and materials, including fabrics, quilt and the needles.

Celebrating the strength of women is Parvathi Nayar’s series Spine. The graphite on wood work draws parallel between the spine and the manner in which women hold their strength. Delhi-based Vibha Galhotra comments on urban space in fine print. “The minimalist work seemed most appropriate for the theme,” said Galhotra looking at the white-on-white print. She added,“I don’t believe in ‘genderisation’ and an artist is an artist, but the work of women artists in this show has a different sensibility.”

The exhibition at Gallery Espace is on till October 3.
