On a High Note

If you enjoy singing, but you’ve never been able to sum up the courage to belt out a number in front of an audience, this might be the right time to shed those inhibitions.

Sing while you drink at Harry’s Karaoke Bar

If you enjoy singing, but you’ve never been able to sum up the courage to belt out a number in front of an audience, this might be the right time to shed those inhibitions. To help you out (or drown out your off key voice),is Harry’s,a karaoke bar that’s just opened in Ansal Plaza. It stocks the latest acoustics and state of the art musical accompaniments, designed to make even the shrillest of us sound bearable. Promoted by restaurateur Ranjiv Kumar, who runs Mirchi in Connaught Place, the bar is spacious, divided into two sections in an area of 2,800 sq ft with seating for at least 100 people. For a few extra bucks (depending on the number of people and package you choose),you can have an exclusive karaoke get together with your very own song list in the lounge area . “The idea behind this place is to encourage closet singers to come out of their shell with some professional help,” explains Kumar. For this the bar has sought help from musicians of Dhwani,an upcoming Indi-Rock band to sing every night at the bar and encourage audience participation. So if you feel like, you can hop across to the small stage in the front where the sound system and keyboard is placed, pick up a cordless microphone and sing along with the band. Like all karaoke joints, two large glass screens fixed on either side of the rooms will screen the lyrics of the song along with their original music videos for assistance. Though they are in the process of acquiring the licenses for using these videos, the idea is to get the actual feel for singing. “The singers are only there to keep the ball rolling,” adds Kumar. With a current music list of 150 songs there are various theme nights in the pipeline.

With dim lighting, the interiors are minimalist, with the visible brick masonary giving a rustic touch to the walls, the wooden furniture is draped in leather and gothic era lampshades add to the period setting. You can also browse through some LP covers from the 50-60’s.

The non-singers needn’t be disappointed as they can tuck into an elaborate food menu which offers dishes from the Indian,Mediterranean and Oriental cuisines. We settled for a plate of Murgh Banno Kekab (Rs 300) apt, while listening to the Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams and moved over to a Mezze Platter (Rs 400) with excellent lamb kebabs while unwinding with Desert Rose by Sting. The Grilled Spiced fish (Rs 425) comes seasoned with paprika and thyme while the Malabar fish curry (Rs 400) is nicely spiced. With New Year’s just days away, there could be nothing better than testing your talent with some old tracks and old friends. Who knows, this hip singing spot might just give Ansal Plaza a new lease of life.
