Officials search ways to decongest Millennium City

Although the Millennium City claims to have world-class infrastructure,it seems to have become one of the worst cities in the world as far as roads and traffic congestion is concerned.

Although the Millennium City claims to have world-class infrastructure,it seems to have become one of the worst cities in the world as far as roads and traffic congestion is concerned.

Commuting on two of the busiest and most important roundabouts of the city — IIFCO Chowk and Rajiv Chowk — has become a nightmare for motorists, especially during office hours. While IIFCO Chowk is plagued by the problem of erratic stoppages by autorickshaws and buses, coupled with pedestrians blocking almost two to three lanes in the process, poor designing of Rajiv Chowk invariably leads to traffic snarls everyday.

At IIFCO Chowk, the Traffic department has been unable to prevent blockage of two lanes by autorickshaws and bus drivers. It is one of most important roundabouts, from where one can get connecting options to other areas. “Earlier,it was autorickshaws and buses that used to stop almost in the middle of the roads to pick passengers, and there was a mad rush to get passengers. Now,private cars have also joined the fray,” said Aman, who works in a private company.

The faulty design of Rajiv Chowk,on the other hand, creates a lot of traffic problems everyday. In addition to this, the exit from the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway is quite narrow.

Senior officials of National Highways Association of India, along with local MP Rao Inderjeet, had recently inspected the stretch. The latter had suggested widening of the exits. Rao had also suggested a flyover, which will start before the Rajiv Chowk exit and carry on over the Hero Honda Chowk,so that travellers to Jaipur do not meet those entering Rajiv Chowk and vice versa.

Another major bottleneck is the toll plaza on the Expressway, where rows of vehicles stretch as far as 2.5 km during office hours. “We have asked DS Constructions to make amendments to the plaza as the design is faulty. The design should be in a zigzag way, which will make the traffic flow smoother,” DCP (Traffic) Bharti Arora told Newsline.

Traffic officials said apart from these bottlenecks, there are a few more places in the city that witness major snarls. One is the Huda City Centre Metro station, where traffic comes in from all the sides, and parked autos and passengers create chaos.

“There are two roundabouts at that point which are positioned in a peculiar manner. We recently did away with one roundabouts Another will be taken care of shortly,” said Arora.
