Now Art is Fashion

Even as the gallerists wrapped up the artworks at their booths at the third edition of the India Art Summit on Sunday, back in their galleries another set of artwork was waiting for their attention.

The India Art Summit is over, but the celebration of art continues in galleries around town

Even as the gallerists wrapped up the artworks at their booths at the third edition of the India Art Summit on Sunday, back in their galleries another set of artwork was waiting for their attention. “The footfall at the Summit and interest shown in art was incredible,” says Sunit Kumar of Kumar Art Gallery. Delighted with the response he received at his first year at the India Art Summit,he is hoping for a similar attendance at the opening of his annual show Celebration 2011 at his gallery in Sunder Nagar on January 25. “It brings together some of India’s most admired post-Independence masters, along with younger artists,” adds Jain, pointing out that display will comprise large-format work of 22 artists, including MF Hussain,FN Souza,Sakti Burman,A Ramachandran,Sohan Qadri,Ram Kumar and GR Santosh. The guest list, meanwhile, includes Member of Parliament Jyotiraditya Scindia, and artists Krishen Khanna,Satish Gujral and Paresh Maity.

“This is an apt time to have a grand show — after all so many biggies are in town. People have travelled from all across India and the world for the Summit,” says Renu Modi, director,Gallery Espace. Last week,at her gallery in New Friends Colony, she opened a solo of US-based Zarina Hashmi. Comprising her recent works,in the exhibition, the Aligarh-born artist engages with the idea of “identity and home” and maps memories of her childhood, with the floor-plan of her father’s house among others. “The feedback has been great,” recalls Modi.

Among the other grand solos, taking place in town,is Yusuf Arakkal’s show An Inner Fire,at Art Alive Gallery,Panchsheel Park, and Ranjani Shettar’s Present Continuous at Talwar Gallery,Neeti Bagh. Popular in the international circuit,Shettar’s exhibition brings her recent work to the home country. The installations bring together the industrial and the organic — typical of the Bangalore-based artist.

If Vadehra Art Gallery has dedicated a show to Tyeb Mehta at the Defence Colony space, celebrating the gallery’s 75 th anniversary,Mohit Jain of Dhoomimal Art Centre,in Connaught Place,on the other hand, has commisioned artists across India to produce portraits for the show Portrait of an Artist, that begins on January 28. Painting over fiberglass heads are over a 100 artists, including GR Iranna,Farhad Hussain,Jai Zharotia and Thota Vaikuntham.

Want to see the works of new names in the circuit? Seema Subbanna is curating a show of young artists at Gallery Ensign,Geetanjali Enclave. The new-look Lalit Kala Akademi, meanwhile,is hosting the exhibition Yeh Image Mahaan: India Meets Bharat, that brings together pop imagery and tribal art.
