Admitting that sterilisation and vaccination of stray dogs, which is being done with the help of NGOs, has not been very effective, North Delhi mayor Ravinder Gupta on Tuesday directed the Veterinary department of the corporation to take steps to develop places to house stray dogs.

The mayor stated that the growing dog menace in the city needs to be curtailed and measures such as these need to be undertaken urgently. This comes after the corporation recorded an increase in cases of rabies after dog bites.

“The multi-pronged approach would have to be adopted to deal with this problem by focusing on vaccination, sterilisation and development of dog house at the same time,” the mayor said. He also said that other civic agencies need to be involved in curbing this issue as there is shortage of land under the North DMC for this purpose.
