With the opening of a new domestic terminal and another integrated terminal scheduled to open early next year at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, government sources have indicated that the projected power requirement of the airport is going to shoot up by over four times.
The airport already witnesses frequent power outages and its current demand of around 30 mega watt (MW) is expected to rise to approximately 120 MW by April next year.
In order to meet this expected growth in demand,Delhi Transco Limited is now in the process of setting up a 220 KV sub-station at village Samalkha near the airport. This sub-station will be attached to two 110 KV transformers and is expected to be ready by February next year,at a cost of Rs 100 crore.
The Delhi government had informed Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrashekhar about the development at a recent Cabinet meeting chaired by him on airport-related matters. Airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) informed the Cabinet Secretary about an additional load requirement of 60 MW by early next year.
While the new domestic terminal,1D,was thrown open for operations on April 19,another under construction state-of-the-art integrated terminal,T3,is likely to start operations by March next year.
With the opening of T-1D,the airports capacity has gone up to 26 million passengers. This capacity is expected to increase to 60 million passengers after the T3 is ready for operations.
The power requirement at IGI is also set to increase because of DIALs airport hospitality district, proposed to come up across 45 acres with hotels and guest houses across all categories, from super luxury to budget.
The new 220 KV sub-station will cater to the T-1D and T3 terminals as well as the hotels that come up as part of the airport hospitality district, A K Kaul, director of Delhi Transco Limited, said.
Government sources said the government has undertaken regular monitoring to ensure various power projects are implemented as per the accorded time frame,so that there is no power crisis when Delhi hosts the Commonwealth Games in October next year.
