NEET paper leak case: Impersonation in focus as CBI takes over 7 cases

The ministry has informed the CBI that seven cases have been registered at different police stations to investigate irregularities in the exam. The letter was sent to Delhi Police after taking approval from CBI Director Praveen Sood.

Days after taking over the investigation in three states in connection with the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) (NEET-UG) paper leak case and alleged irregularities in the exam, the CBI took seven different cases registered by the Delhi Police related with impersonation for a “comprehensive investigation”.

In a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora on June 24, additional director, CBI, A Y V Krishna requested for the transfer of the seven cases. “The Education Ministry (has) requested CBI to conduct a comprehensive investigation…,” the letter stated.

The ministry has informed the CBI that seven cases have been registered at different police stations to investigate irregularities in the exam. The letter was sent to Delhi Police after taking approval from CBI Director Praveen Sood.

“In order to conduct a comprehensive investigation…it is advisable for the CBI to take up all the ongoing cases in the matter from a comprehensive view…We are also writing to all other state governments…,” the letter further stated.

A source said around 16 persons were arrested in these seven cases, adding raids are still being conducted to bust the “whole gang”. Said the source, “The CBI has registered a fresh case and will take legal custody of the arrested persons in the coming days.”

Sharing details of one of the cases registered at Tilak Marg police station, in which four persons, including two MBBS students from a government medical college, were arrested at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Mehta Vidyalaya, a source in the CBI said the probe has revealed that one of the accused, Vijay Gupta, was sending broadcast messages to the phone numbers of the aspirants.

“They claimed guaranteed admission and shared the phone number of one of their associates, Dilshad Ahmad alias Sachin Mathur, who is absconding…They used to mix the photograph of the original student with the dummy student. For this work, another accused, Prabhat Kumar, who used to run a coaching academy, hired a photographer from Patna…,” the source said.

A source said the incident came to light after two students were caught with mismatched biometric details.
