Rashi Kheterpal,a home maker from Vasant Kunj,is in a dilemma. She has twins — a boy and a girl — but only the daughter has got admission to pre-school this year. Her son,three-year-old Krish, did not find a berth in any school.

“My daughter Riti got through a school in Vasant Kunj as she got points for being a girl child, but Krish did not get through any,” says Kheterpal.

Devinder Kaul had applied to 17 schools for his first-born,but his son’s name did not figure in any school shortlist. “There is a school close to my house, but there also my child could not get admission.”

Many parents like Kheterpal and Kaul, who failed to gain nursery admission for children, gathered outside the Directorate of Education office on Wednesday to protest the points system adopted by private schools across the Capital.

Most parents had applied to multiple schools — some in as many as 20. They handed a memorandum to Director P Krishnamurthy demanding “a common form for all the schools”. They also said that points for alumni should be scrapped. “It is like a khandani system, only those children get through schools whose parents are alumni,” said Brajesh Kumar,a parent.

There was also a demand to scrap points for tranfer cases. “Schools allot points for parents who are transfer cases, but a transfer certificate is so easy to get these days. And why should transfer cases get points at all,” said Anil Kumar Batra from Mukherji Nagar.

All were of the opinion that seats should be increased in all schools. The protest was organised by admissionsnursery.com forum.

Parents said first-born,siblings and girl child should get equal points. A list of schools that flouted admission norms was also handed to the director who promised action.
