Their stories are captured in opaque alcohol bottles. Be it a Hangover-inspired Las Vegas trip,a love confession gone wrong,or a list of pick-up lines, all the experiences of people, hang from the ceiling in the form of post-its,sketches and glitter frames. Delhi-based designer Shilpa Wadhwas concept,Wishbox Studio,is a curious mix of fun and professional design,a result of her involvement in the latest exhibition in the city,20under35 at Alliance Francaise.
Organised by Designxdesign,a forum created two years ago for the important issues in the field of design, the show is a group effort involving 20 designers and architects between the age of 20 and 35 years. The idea is two-fold: We are trying to find out the trends in a given time. One way of doing this is to look at works of young designers, which is also a platform to encourage them, said Iftikhar-Mulk Chishti, the curator of 20under35.
On display are works by young Delhi-based designers like Wadhwa,Gunjan Gupta of the label Wrap,Divyam Mehta,NIFT-graduate Amit Aggarwal and Anand Bhushan, who debuted at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week this year, among others. Given no themes, the free-floating,quirky and individualistic designs speak for themselves. Since they didnt give us any theme,we wanted to have some fun and shortlisted a few things to play around, explained Wadhwa about Wishbox Studio. One was the nostalgia around drinking experience and we requested people to send us their experience. We recieved around 16 of them and shortlisted eight. We eventually decided to express their stories with bottles as the canvas, she said.
Interesting designs include product designer Paul Sandip and toy designer Suhasini Pauls toys for children, and Amit Aggarwals work called Morphe, which has clothes in translucent materials of metal yarn, elastane, mesh and membrane moulded over hollow spaces, depicting innovative possibilities in expressing forms. We hope this activity continues through the years because theres a lack of such platforms in the city, concluded Chishti.
The exhibition is on at Galerie Romain Rolland,Alliance Francaise, till January 4 at 11 am-8 pm. Entry is free.
