On October 15, 78-year-old Inder Dutt left his home in Mayur Vihar for his regular evening walk. The family was mindful of the things he was allowed to do solo, since he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) around three years ago. The 15-minute walk through a familiar route was one of them.
That day, however, Dutt did not return home. Thirteen days later, his family is still struggling to search for him, as he may not know how to find his way back. Dutt was progressing towards advanced stage AD, losing his powers of memory and comprehension, his family members said. According to them, Dutt was not carrying any ID or money.
Apurv said their family and friends have put up hundreds of posters within a 10-km radius around their home, and carried out intensive social media initiatives. But these efforts have yielded no result so far.
Dutt’s family members alleged that the police seemed ill-equipped to handle the case. “Nobody seems to understand the sensitivity of the case… what it means for an AD patient to go missing,” Apurv said.
But police insisted they were making all possible efforts to trace Dutt. “We have uploaded his photo on the police website… The problem is that even if he is with somebody, he will not be able to tell them who he is or where he lives,” said DCP (East) B S Gurjar.
