Mexican Rap

Actors Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori have been in the spotlight for their upcoming film Kites, but here is a back story you didn’t know: Mori says she had second thoughts about doing the film after watching Roshan’s Jodhaa Akbar. “Rakesh (Roshan) and Anurag (Basu) met me in Los Angeles to discuss the film. Since I hadn’t met Hrithik, they invited me for a special screening of Jodhaa Akbar in LA. When I saw him on screen,I did not like him because of the character he plays in the film. I wondered if this is who I will be cast opposite,” laughs Mori, imitating Roshan’s characteristic walk as Akbar.

But before taking the final call, the Mexican actor was wise enough to watch Lakshya and Koi Mil Gaya. “He looked good as a soldier in Lakshya and I was impressed by his acting skills,” she says, calling him “the best co-star” so far. “He is a very nice human being. He took good care of me on the sets,” she says, happy about venturing into Bollywood.

At the hotel Oakwood Premium in Juhu, her temporary residence in Mumbai,Mori is in a summery white tube dress, with curls brushing against her face and is delighted about giving an interview in English. “When I started Kites,I spoke very few English words. Now I speak a lot better,” she says, making a mention of her character who speaks English and Spanish in the film. “I play a Spanish girl who travels to Las Vegas to earn money. She then meets a rich guy and thinks she is in love with him,but later finds out that true love lies somewhere else, and she has to choose between money and love,” says Mori, who first came to India two years ago to meet the Roshan clan.

Mori, who lived all her life in Mexico, was aware of the Hindi film industry, but didn’t know much about its actors or filmmakers. “When I told my friends that I have been offered a Bollywood movie, they were very excited. But I was worried about speaking in Hindi. I was also worried about singing and dancing, which I knew was huge in Bollywood,” says Mori. She eventually had to shake her leg in the film, but, she says gleefully,“it’s been edited out of the film for some reason and I am so happy about it”.

Basking in the limelight is a Bollywood ritual, but Mori seems quite untouched by adulation. About having thousands of fans on Twitter, she says,“All this attention is good for the movie,no?” She has her peeves —“I hate Indian food, because it is too spicy.” “But the people,” she adds,“are so warm and friendly here.” A recent act of hospitality was witnessed at Shah Rukh Khan’s residence, where she went along with Suzanne Roshan. “Suzanne wanted me to meet all her friends in the industry. There was some cricket match going on. And after the match,we partied,” she says, slightly confused about the status cricket enjoys in India and in the Khan household.

She says she will back in Bollywood. “I first have a film to complete in Venezuela. Then I have an offer from here. If things work out,I will be back in January,” she says. And will she have to learn Hindi for her next film? “No,this one does not require Hindi either. But if I have to,I am open to it,” she says. For now,if anyone attempts to speak to her in Hindi, she has just two words,“Tu ch****a.”
