(Express Photo)A 23-year-old man, who worked at a restaurant, was killed and two of his colleagues were injured after they were hit by a Mercedes G-Wagon car near Ambience Mall in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj in the early hours of Sunday, police said. The accused driver, identified as Shivam, was returning home from his own wedding, along with his wife and elder brother, when he lost control of the vehicle.
According to the police, the accident occurred around 2.30 am, when the driver of the speeding Mercedes G 63 lost control of the vehicle, hit the divider opposite a bus stop, and skidded towards the autorickshaw stand where Kapil (35) Rohit Bisht (23) and Lalit (23) were standing, a police officer said.
The police said a control room call regarding the accident was received at the Vasant Kunj North police station around 2.33 am. A team immediately reached the spot opposite Ambience Mall at Nelson Mandela Marg, towards Vasant Vihar.
“Upon arrival, a Mercedes G 63 car was found in an accidental condition, and three persons — two aged 23 and one 35 — all employees of a restaurant at Ambience Mall, were found lying at the spot in an injured condition,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Amit Goel.
The three youths were rushed to AIIMS, where Rohit, who hailed from Chamoli in Uttarakhand, was declared dead on arrival. The others are currently under treatment.
“The driver of the Mercedes car, identified as Shivam, a resident of New Delhi’s Karol Bagh, has been apprehended. He was driving the vehicle along with his wife and elder brother. As per preliminary inquiry, he lost balance due to a diversion, resulting in the car hitting a pole where the three victims were standing at an autorickshaw stand,” DCP Goel said.
A police officer also said that Shivam, a software engineer, got married at a gurdwara near Priya Complex in Vasant Vihar on Saturday evening, and then went to Hotel Grand for the reception. When he reached Nelson Mandela Marg, there were two dividers in front of Shivam. One would lead him towards IIT, while the other — closer to the bus stand — was for a U-turn.
“Shivam, along with his wife and brother, was returning to their residence in Noida in the SUV, which he had borrowed from his friend. Prima facie, it seems that the driver got confused about the route, and lost the balance while turning towards the divider near the bus stand. Shivam has undergone a medical examination, done to verify if he was in an inebriated state. Shivam, his wife and brother are safe and none of them was seriously injured in the incident,” a police officer said.
The police indicated that the offending vehicle is registered under the name of one Abhishek, a friend of Shivam.
A case has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 106 (death due to negligence), 281 (negligent driving), and 125 (endangering human life), police said, adding that an investigation was underway.
