Med Mecca

A hearty meal at Mediza comes at pocket-friendly rates

When young entrepreneurs Rickey Randhawa and Nitin Gupta planned a restaurant in Delhi, neither of them knew that soon they would launch in the midst of the world’s worst slowdown in recent times. “It was boom time when we began searching for space and rentals were very high. As soon as we shortlisted the place and opened Mediza, the market crashed,” says Randhawa wryly, who has honed his hospitality skills in New Zealand before venturing into business back home. Soon the duo decided that they will have to go beyond the print ads and street side hoardings to draw in people and came across a smart new plan. “We set up a kiosk at Khan Market and offered the passer-bys free samplings of cold mezze and cheese cakes and once they become familiar with us,we inform them about Mediza,” adds Randhawa.

At their tony restaurant set up in Lajpat Nagar II,“which was the only space available for their budget”,the eatery is spread across three levels. The first floor is done up in purple and white, while the glittering sheer curtains add a new dimension to the rectangular block. The second level showcases a lounge area with hues of red and the terrace is still undergoing finishes and looks good for the evenings. The menu has a decent mix of Mediterranean and classic Italian dishes.

Must Try
We begin with Tabboulieh (Rs 145),a fresh salad of parsley, tomatoes and cracked wheat and follow it up with Cheese Sambousek (Rs 145),crispy filo triangles stuffed with melting cheese. An order of Lamb tikkis (Rs 295) serves us flattened moons of spicy lamb and the meat is juicy. In the main course,Mediza Sole (Rs 345) is a winning entrée of two fillets smeared with spicy dressing, with just a hint of sugar. Baked Chicken Vasilikos (Rs 325) is equally well done. The thick chicken slabs are stuffed with mushroom and cheese and dressed with scrumptious pesto cream. We also tried Mushroom Risotto (Rs 275) that turned out to be exceptionally well done. The sticky Italian rice was well balanced with cheese and some herbal flavouring.

Give a miss
The Souvlaki (Rs 245 for two sticks) was a bit too bland and chicken skewers lacked flavours.
