A Delhi court on Tuesday remanded sacked head constable Satish Chand in 14 days’ judicial custody. He was arrested by the Delhi police on Monday after he allegedly hit a woman with a brick after she refused to pay ‘bribe’ allegedly demanded by the constable. Chand was produced before the sessions court — dealing with the cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Special Judge Narottam Kaushal remanded Chand in judicial custody for 14 days. A case has been registered against Chand under Section 7 (public servant taking gratification other than legal remuneration in respect of an official action) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. [related-post] Police also registered a case under Section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), Section 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and Section 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code. Special Judge Narottam Kaushal rejected the Delhi police’s plea to extend police custody by a day. Police had sought the extension on the ground that they are yet to investigate the conduct of the sacked constable in the past and also wanted to know about his properties. During the hearing on Tuesday, Chand’s counsel, advocate Rajiv Mohan, also moved a bail plea before the court. The court will hear the plea on May 16. HC takes up case suo motu Taking note of media reports, the Delhi High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of Monday’s incident of a traffic policeman allegedly attacking a woman with a brick after he stopped her for an alleged traffic violation. The court of Chief justice G Rohini and Justice RS Endlaw will take up the case as a PIL on Wednesday. The 15-second video clip shows head constable Satish Chand throwing a brick at the woman, Ramanjeet Kaur. He had stopped Kaur after she allegedly jumped a light in Golf Links. Kaur was with her three daughters, who witnessed the entire incident.
