Eyeing 100% remediation of the Capital’s three legacy waste sites by 2027, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Thursday approved the setting up of four solid waste processing plants.
The new plants, to be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 361.42 cr, are likely to be operational within six months.
Officials said the target is to empty Bhalswa waste site by December 2026, Ghazipur by 2027 and Okhla by July 2026, and not dump fresh waste at these sites anymore.
Instead, the waste would be taken to the four new plants that are coming up at Bhalswa, Singhola, Okhla and Narela Bawana, with the capacity to process 1,800 TPD (tonnes per day), 700 TPD, 1,400 TPD and 1,200 TPD waste, respectively.
“Since 2019, MCD has been carrying out biomining of legacy waste at the three dumpsites. Subsequently, 25 acres have been reclaimed at Bhalswa dumpsite and 10 acres at Okhla. At Singhola, MCD has reclaimed 7.2 acres of land after biomining of silt waste. Moreover, there is land of 10 acres at integrated MSW (municipal solid waste) processing facility at Narela-Bawana,” said a civic body official.
About 11,500 MT of municipal solid waste is generated daily within MCD limits. The civic body operates four waste-to-energy plants at Narela-Bawana (1,300 TPD), Okhla (1,550 TPD), Tehkhand (2,000 TPD) and Ghazipur (1,300 TPD), with a total processing capacity of 6,550 TPD. In addition, MCD also operates decentralised processing facilities. However, 4,712 TPD is still being dumped at the Bhalswa, Okhla and Ghazipur dumpsites.
The day also saw AAP leaders wearing black masks in the House, protesting against the increasing air pollution in the Capital.
Leader of Opposition Ankush Narang said, “Despite a so-called ‘four-engine’ BJP government, Delhi’s air has turned poisonous, forcing people to breathe suffocating air while children and the elderly fall ill… yet both the BJP government and the MCD administration remain silent.”
