July is usually an action-packed affair for cine aficionados every year, with the Osian’s Cine Fan film festival showcasing the best of world cinema. This year though, founder and chief executive of Osian’s,Neville Tulli, has had to contend with technical snags that has led to the festival being pushed back to October 24. The 11th edition of the festival has also been crunched to a week-long affair. Incidentally, this year the festival will also have a new director— Indu Shrikent, who is also one of the founding members of the event.

The festival will open with a Romanian film,Hooked by director Adrian Sitaru, which tells the story of two people who are forced to cross moral boundaries in order to survive. With no particular theme, the highlights for this year will be Osian’s Learning and Education (OLE) programme running parallel to the screenings. “The idea is to hold panel discussions, debates, seminars on themes that arise from the films. A crucial aspect of this festival is to provide the resources for learning through guided exhibition tours and tutorials,” explains filmmaker Mani Kaul, who is also the director-general of the festival.

From over 200 films last year, the count is down to 100 this year (56 in the feature category and remaining in the short films). There will be an exhibition on the history of Indian cinema, which will trace the achievements of Indian film-makers and their works.

The usual Bollywood glitterati is expected, with Kaminey director Vishal Bharadwaj, Love Aaj Kal’s Imtiaz Ali and Dev D ‘s Anurag Kashyap confirming their presence during the screening of their films. “A new wave of Hindi cinema is emerging from Mumbai, that believes in showing reality in a literal manner. We need to acknowledge that,” adds Tulli. On October 29 a virtual auction of unique Indian antiquities, memorabilia, books and modern contemporary art works will also be held.

The festival is on till October 30. The venues will be the Siri Fort auditorium and Alliance Francaise. Entry to the festival is free.
