Mathura Police arrested a 27-year-old man after he allegedly threatened to kill Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in a video posted on a social media site. Police said the accused was arrested late Friday evening.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Mathura Superintendent of Police, Rural, Suresh Chandra Rawat said that a police team came across the video on Friday. “The video was uploaded around 2 pm. The man in the video, who had a pistol in his hand, threatened the Chief Minister.”

Rawat said a police team confirmed the man’s name and address. “A team was sent to arrest him.”

Rawat said that when the police team reached his residence, the man climbed up to the terrace of his three-storeyed building with a pistol in hand and began threatening the police that he would shoot himself if they arrested him.

“It took us three to four hours to arrest him. The team initially tried convincing him to come down, but he remained adamant. The team then used a ladder to climb up the backside of the terrace, caught hold of him, and recovered the pistol,” he said.

According to police, the man had a grudge as he claimed no action was taken in a complaint he allegedly lodged over an ongoing land dispute with a relative. “There is no registered case of the land dispute with us… We are trying to investigate how he got access to the country-made pistol,” a police officer said.

“We have arrested him and registered an FIR under relevant sections, and the probe has begun to look into all possibilities,” said Rawat.
