Many women, young faces among Congress ticket-seekers

The Congress has received an ‘unprecedented’ number of applications from women and aspirants under the age of 35.

Along with relatives of sitting MLAs,ministers and senior party leaders, the Congress has received an ‘unprecedented’ number of applications from women and aspirants under the age of 35. At present, the Delhi Assembly comprises just three women from the Congress, including Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

A senior Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) functionary said between 40 and 50 per cent of the 1,600-odd applications received since September 24 were of women and relatively younger candidates.

“Though the scrutiny is yet to be completed,we have found that a fair share of applications are from women. It’s much better than before,” he said.

According to sources in the DPCC,all applications were accepted except those of candidates who had lost either two municipal corporation or Assembly elections. “We had only one condition for now,the election committee and screening committee will sift through the rest,” a senior leader said.
