Maruti Suzukis Manesar facility opened after over a month amid tight security on Tuesday.
Armed guards frisked the 300 permanent workers reporting for duty,many of whom had begun to line up in the rain up to an hour ahead of the scheduled 8 am opening. Over 1,000 police personnel were deployed at the plant,besides the anti-riot Rapid Action Force (RAF),the India Reserve Battalion,and the companys own 100-strong security team led by senior former Army officers.
A fifth of the 500 RAF personnel will be deployed inside the premises during each of the two shifts. Forty personal security officers will protect senior company officials at home and work.
Maruti Suzuki declared a lockout at the Manesar plant after violent incidents on July 18,in which one senior manager was killed. The company has lost an estimated Rs 1,400 crore as a result of the violence. Five hundred workers have been sacked.
Senior Superintendent of Police Yogender Nehra said 1,200-1,500 personnel were on duty inside and around the plant. The forces will be there until peace is re-established in the area, he said. Gurgaon Police Commissioner K K Sindhu inspected the security arrangement at the plant.
Residents of nearby villages celebrated the reopening by distributing sweets. We will do whatever we can to help
restore normalcy, Kasan village sarpanch Ramesh Singh Chauhan said.
