Man who posed as saree seller to steal nabbed in Delhi’s Shahdara; accomplice on the run
Police said that several men from Suhail’s home town also live in Sundar Nagri and are engaged in the same trade

Days after a jewellery theft at a residence in Shahdara’s MS Park, a 24-year-old man who posed as a saree seller to allegedly commit the burglary was arrested on August 23, police said on Friday. While the accused would pretend to be a saree salesman, his accomplice would break into houses, the police said. The accomplice is absconding, officers said.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Salman (24), a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested from Sundar Nagri in the intervening night of August 22 and 23. The scooter used in the alleged crime was recovered from his possession, said police.
The police were notified of the incident when they received a PCR call on August 19 regarding a burglary at a house. A case was registered at MS Park police station under sections 305(a) and 331(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
When investigators examined the CCTV footage from the locality, they noticed two men arriving on a scooter before approaching their target house. “It was found that one of the miscreants stood outside the complainant’s house on a scooter on the pretext of selling sarees and suits while his accomplice broke the lock of the complainant’s house, stealing gold and silver jewellery items from the residence. The team got some clear snapshots of the alleged criminal by analysing the CCTV footage and also got hold of the number plate of the scooter used in the alleged crime,” said DCP Shahdara, Parshant Gautam.
The vehicle was found to be registered in the name of Ravish, a resident of Pasonda in Ghaziabad, whose brother Suhail emerged as a key suspect, said police. Suhail, police said, has a criminal history and frequently moves between Sundar Nagri in Delhi and parts of Ghaziabad.
With the help of technical surveillance and local informers, police tracked down and arrested Salman. Raids were subsequently conducted at possible hideouts of co-accused Suhail in Sundar Nagri, Pasonda and Dasna, but he was found to be on the run, said police.
During questioning, Salman allegedly revealed that he is a permanent resident of Muzaffarnagar and had shifted to Sundar Nagri where he lived in a rented house and earned his livelihood by selling sarees and suits in residential areas. He came in contact with Suhail about four months ago through Ravish and started accompanying him, officers said.
Police said that several men from Suhail’s home town also live in Sundar Nagri and are engaged in the same trade. Salman allegedly told investigators that Suhail often changed his place of stay, moving between houses of friends, relatives and acquaintances, said police.
Efforts are underway to nab Suhail and recover the stolen jewellery, officers added.
